SEASON REVIEW 12-13

Season Review- 2012-2013

What a year it has been at CHS’ PE Department with success in every sport.
Premier League School Champions

The stand out performance has to be from the team of the year, the victorious under 13 girls. On May 9th the under 13 girls represented Stoke City at the Premier League Schools’ Tournament at Anfield. The pressure the girls had to deal with playing at a premier league ground was huge but the girls thrived under it. The girls’ qualified through the group stage undefeated and only QPR stood in CHS’ way of reaching the final. CHS progressed to the final thanks to an extra-time winner from captain Hollie Massey. The final was against Aston Villa and CHS became Premier League Champions when Massey scored a header from Bennet’s clearance. The trophy, presented by the Chairman of The Premier League Sir Dave Richards, accompanied by Liverpool FC players Jordan Henderson and Lucas Leiva, is now displayed proudly at school.

Football
There was more success for CHS’ footballers, with years 7, 9 and 10 boys winning their South Cheshire Leagues, which was down to their strong performances as well as battling on whatever the British weather threw at them, which some schools’ didn’t do which meant that CHS claimed even more silverware. But, the silverware in football didn’t stop there, as the year 10 boys won the South Cheshire Cup, 3-2, after a nail-biting final against Kingsgrove. The under 14-girls, which were made up of most of the team who are National Champions, also won their South Cheshire League and the Cheshire School Games.

Hockey
Staying with the winter sports, Hockey was another sport which all years have excelled in this year. In particluar Rebecca Barlow’s year 8’s, who have recorded wins of 9-0, 4-0 and 6-0, with Barlow being their star player. Barlow’s player of the match performances as well as her goals helped them to win the Cheshire League. Year 7 also won the Cheshire League in their first year of high school hockey.

Rugby
It has been quite a successful year in rugby, with Year 7 and Year 10 winning the Cheshire Inter School Championships.

Netball
More success for CHS came in Netball when CHS were triple South Cheshire Champions when years 7, 8 and 10 were victorious in March at the South Cheshire Netball Championships. Years 7 and 8 went on to do the double also winning their respective leagues.

Badminton

CHS were also victorious in badminton with the Under 16 Girls and the Under 14 Boys both winners of the Sandbach School’s Partnership badminton tournament.

New Sports to CHS
CHS has seen a sudden increase in participation in basketball and table tennis this year. Now is this down to Lord Coe’s Olympic Legacy? Who knows! The interest in basketball created a new team, coached by Mr. Hermitt and captained by Paddy McGovern. CHS started well but suffered their first defeat of their season after back to back wins. There was also an increase in interest in table tennis so much so the first whole school table tennis tournament was set up. Over 50 students signed up and played in the first round. But the final two standing were Mr de Souza and James Garside. Mr de Souza was crowned CHS’ table tennis champion after winning 11-8 and 12-10.

Athletics
CHS’ athletics team has dominated the local area, like it has done for the past 10 years. Following, CHS winning their first competition they progressed to the South Cheshire Athletic Championships, where they won the junior, minor and inter competitions. This meant that CHS are South Cheshire Athletic Champions for the 6th time in 10 years. Wow!

Cricket
The highlight of this year’s cricket season has to be CHS’ All Star XI winning their own version of the Ashes when they beat Haileybury College, who were on tour here from Australia. Year 7 won convincingly against rivals, Eaton Bank whereas the year 8 couldn’t do the same and suffered a defeat against them.

Rounder’s
Year 11 were South Cheshire runners up but year 8 went one better when they won the South Cheshire Rounder’s Championships.

Tennis
Andy Murray’s victory at Wimbledon hasn’t been Britain’s only success in Tennis. Oh no! Year 7 and 8 girls were also victorious in tennis when they won the South Cheshire Tennis Championships.

Events
Like every year, Sports Day was a huge success at CHS this year with 15 records being broken.

SPORTS AWARD EVENING- 10th July

Sports Award Evening

CHS’ 6th annual Sports Awards Evening took place on Wednesday 10th July, which celebrated and ended a remarkable year of sport for CHS, with success coming in every sport.

The evening started with a sports themed delicious 3-course meal for the guests, provided by Year 10 catering students. After the meal the awards ceremony took place, which was an opportunity for CHS to celebrate the sporting success of students both inside and outside of school. Over 100 awards were presented on the night including Contribution to Sport, Extra Curricular, Player of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Sports Person of the Year.

The special guest on the night was Nick Powell, who progressed through Crewe Alexandra’s famous youth teams and now plays for Manchester United. Powell presented some of the awards and did a question and answer session which included advising students on how to juggle school work and sporting activities. It also gave students and guests an insight into his journey as a footballer.

Team of the Year Award

One of the award’s presented by Nick Powell was Team of the Year. This year the award went to the under 13 girls football team who like Nick know what it feels like to be Premier League Champions. The under 13 girls football team became Premier League Champions this year after winning the Premier League Schools’ Tournament at Anfield, whilst representing Stoke City. The girls’ showed great teamwork as well as an array of talent.

Daniel Sturridge Rising Star Award

The Daniel Sturridge Rising Star Award is named after former CHS student and now Liverpool FC striker Daniel Sturridge and how fitting that this year the award went to Hollie Massey. Hollie is inspiring to many, who in school represents 7 school teams and captains 4 of them and always shows great enthusiasm and commitment to each sport. When she isn’t representing CHS she plays for Manchester United, and is now part of the England Under 15’s girls team and received her first cap last year following attendance at training camps at the new England Training Complex, St. George’s Park.

The Lynda Arnold Award

The Lynda Arnold Award, named after a former PE teacher, is for outstanding contribution to school sport. This year the award went to Nathan Stirk who has shown outstanding contribution to school sport throughout his time at CHS and is currently completing the year 12 BTEC Sport course which he has shown enthusiasm in right from the start.

Future Champions Campaign

The evening also saw the Future Champions Campaign launched where the campaign ambassadors were recognised and received a badge. Future champions is about identifying CHS’ high achieving students that represent and compete at high levels and then to instigate mentoring through a programme to enhance their experiences. The students will share and develop with one another to hopefully reach their goals and academic potential.  They will study 5 specific units designed to further increase that potential both inside and outside of CHS

CHS Win Their Own Verison of the Ashes!

CHS win their own version of the Ashes!

A CHS cricket team recently beat a school touring side from Australia in a match arranged through our tour provider Tours 4 Sport.  The game was hastily arranged after the side from Haileybury College, Melbourne, had a fixture cancelled at short notice.  The tour company contacted CHS, who were happy to oblige by putting together a select XI team made up of current Year 12s, Year 11s that are returning in September and some recently departed year 13s.  The CHS team put in a great performance in the emphatic win, with BTEC sport student, Nick Atkinson, scoring 67 off 63 balls and taking 3 wickets to gain him recognition as ‘Man of the Match.’ (England could have done with Nick today in their first test match!)
Mr Cross, Deputy Curriculum Team Leader for PE said “Our appreciation and thanks goes to Peover Cricket Club for hosting the game at short notice and to Mr Naylor for taking the team.  We extended a warm welcome to our visitors and hope to stay in contact with them in the future.”

Success for Athletes as they Shine in the Summer Sun

Today (8th July) the success filled year for CHS’ PE Department continued when CHS’ athletes won every category at the South Cheshire Athletic Championships.

CHS' dominated each discipline and this was shown in the overall results as CHS' won all the category's (Minor, Junior and Inter), this just shows the strength in depth that CHS has when it comes down to athletics.
The sun shone as bright as the CHS athletes performances, including Emma Basten (girls captain) who led by example when she won all her races. The whole team performed exceptionally and triumphed in the very hot conditions!

Keep checking over the coming days as there will be a review of the year very soon on here!

Sports Day 2013- 2nd July

Sports Day 2013
One of the highlights of the school calendar took place today (2nd July) CHS' sports day.

The first part of the morning saw the field events take place. These included shot put, javelin, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump. These events were very successful and school records were broken in some of them.

After the conclusion of the field events, the whole school made their way out onto the field to support their friends in the track events and not even the rain could dampen their spirit! Although the conditions may not have been the best some of the athletes performed exceptionally well and a few school records were broken including the 200m.

Brian Barton (year 10), who in recent years has made the 100m his own set himself a new challenge this year of competing in the 200m. Barton didn’t only win the 200m but he did it in fashion, breaking former student and now Liverpool FC striker Daniel Sturridge’s record over this distance.
